Norway – Finnmarksvidda Crossing

Cross country ski trip crossing the Finnmarksvidda plateau, home to the Sami native people.

  • Temperature 12-18°C
  • Long summer days
  • Short winter nights
  • Rugged coastline
  • Coastal fjords
  • Mountain glaciers
  • ‘Hygge’ lifestyle
  • Believe in elves
  • Sami native people

This trip is a ‘classic’ journey across a high wilderness plateau located in the far north of Norway. An ideal location for the Northern Lights, if they choose to come out and we have clear nights! Finnmarksvidda is home to the Sami native people of northern Scandinavia, and their nomadic reindeer herding lifestyle.

Our accommodation at the start and finish point for the journey is in cabins at Alta Strand camping, situated on the edge of Alta town. Passing two of the three cabins on the plateau that were originally built back in 1840 by the Norwegian Government for passing priests, doctors and the sheriff, these lodges were located 30km apart (the average distance travelled by horse and cart) but we will overnight in our tents, as usual, when ‘on tour’.
